Location, Size & Early History. . .

Located in the NE of Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island covers 3,970 sq. mi. (10,282 sq. km) with a population of 147,454 (2001 census) Separated from the mainland by the Strait of Canso, Cape Breton Island is believed to be discovered by the English navigator John Cabot in 1497. Controlled by the French from 1623 to 1763, it was renamed 'le Royale and fortified at Louisburg. It passed to the English in 1713.

In years gone by you would have seen a much larger industry presence; today because of its impressive scenery and cultural heritage, tourism and recreational activities predominate on Cape Breton Island.

Descendants of Scottish immigrants dominate Cape Breton Island culture, particularly in rural communities and the famous Cape Breton Style Celtic Music can be heard in most communities.
