The Trails . . .
Ceilidh Trail, Cape Breton Island: along Route 19;
the sunset coast of Cape Breton Island, you will find the Scottish
culture alive and well. Home to such notables as; The Rankin Family,
Natalie MacMaster, John Allen Cameron and many more; the music and

Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Island: often referred to as one of the
most beautiful scenic drives in the world. The Cabot Trail covers over 300 km
(185 mi.) winding around the islands northern shore, through pictureous
coastal communities and beautiful highlands while ascending high into

Marconi Trail, Cape Breton Island: less traveled and steep in
wireless history; home of the Marconi National Historic Site; a museum
celebrating the achievements of Guglielmo Marconi's and the first

Fleur-de-lis Trail, Cape Breton Island: leads you down a rugged
coastlines, through pictureous fishing villages and finally to the
Fortress of Louisbourg; a reconstruction of an 18th century French

Bras d'Or Lakes Scenic Drive, Cape Breton Island: extends around

Location, Size & Early
History. . .
Located in the NE of Nova Scotia, Cape
Breton Island covers 3,970 sq. mi. (10,282 sq. km) with a population of 147,454
(2001 census) Separated from the mainland by the Strait of Canso, Cape Breton
Island is believed to be discovered by the English navigator John Cabot in 1497.
Controlled by the French from 1623 to 1763, it was renamed 'le Royale and fortified at
Louisburg. It passed to the English in 1713.

larger industry presence; today because of its impressive scenery and cultural heritage,
tourism and recreational activities predominate on Cape Breton Island.
Descendants of Scottish immigrants dominate Cape Breton Island culture,
particularly in rural communities and the famous Cape Breton Style Celtic Music
